National Seniors Day Luncheon Oct. 1, 2018

CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS!
The Township of the Archipelago is celebrating National Seniors Day by hosting a Seniors Luncheon October 1, 2018!  The Township is proud to pay tribute to seniors on this day, and thank them for the valuable contributions they have made, and continue to make, in our families, workplaces, and communities.
Admission is free to all Seniors residing in the Township of the Archipelago.

PaB Community Complex Public Meeting June 14

Calling all Archipelago residents!   The Community Complex Committee invites you to a meeting June 14, 6:30 p.m. at the Community Centre to discuss improvements to our local recreational facility, in particular, the construction of a roof rink and the related benefits to our community.  A vote will be taken.  Come out and ensure your voice is heard!

Funding Announcement

The Trustees of the Pointe au Baril Canada Day 150 funds are very pleased to announce an allocation of funding to the PaB Cemetery Board.  Funding will  help meet a long awaited goal of the Cemetery Board – to provide a shelter at our cemetery site located off South Shore Road.  This project will serve to  better accommodate the needs of users of this beautiful site by providing shelter from the elements while at the same time enhancing the park setting and activities that take place there including Remembrance Day ceremonies. The allocation amount will be announced in the spring of 2018 following review of building specifications.

Should funds remain after the donation outlined above, the Trustees have identified the second priority as picnic tables adjacent to the new children’s playground to be built by the Township of the Archipelago on the old nursing station site.

The decisions of the Trustees have been made with community input provided at a Town Hall meeting held Feb. 3, 2018.

TOWN HALL – OUTCOME
A Town Hall community consultation was held Feb. 3, 2018 hosted by the Trustees, Canada Day 150 Surplus Funds, to solicit input from the broader community on how to invest the surplus funds in ways that would benefit our community and honour our promise to Canada Day 150 donors to use the funds for charitable purposes in our community.  The Trustees are tasked with fund disbursement decisions.  We’ll post those decisions as well.  Check back shortly for news on that.

Summary of Town Hall Community Consultation held Feb. 3, 2018
Purpose of Meeting
– Invite members of the PaB community to share ideas on how best to utilize the surplus proceeds from Canada Day 2017 for the benefit of the greater community.

Treasurers Report
– revenue in = $34,573.42. Expenses = $21, 263.38. Bank balance = $13,310.04 Outstanding expenses = $678.00.   Surplus Funds = $12, 632.04.

Canada Day 150 Planning Group has folded having fulfilled its mandate. They did agree to appoint the four executives as trustees of the funds to manage decisions of disbursement of surplus funds. This is not a charitable organization; that would require Federal approval.

Community Input
Representatives from various community groups involved in fundraising for their respective interests were solicited for potential fund considerations. The following groups stated they did not need money:  Florence Church, Arts on the Bay, Bottle Drive, Snowmobile Club, Seniors Group, PaB Pickleball.

The following suggestions were given for consideration of funds:

-extra tint on community centre windows at top to cut glare for pickleball
-shelter/gazebo at cemetery
-park benches for area near new children’s playground
-donation toward new community centre chairs
-donation toward air conditioning for community centre
-Habitat for Humanity
-donation toward fireworks for Canada Day 2018
-donation toward “raise the roof” fund.  The TOA is holding donated funds of $4,335 towards this.  Matt French and David Penfold have spearheaded efforts for “raise the roof” fundraising in the past and currently have $11,500 in the fund.  A covered outdoor recreation complex will lend itself to many activities and uses in the community.
-shelter/heated storage for fire pump at rink and change room
-seed money for Canada Day 2018 fund
-Community Christmas party

Additional comments:
-Bottle Drive to be incorporated with Province (approx cost $4,000).
-What do Islanders want? How do we get their feedback?
-Matt French and David Penfold volunteered to organize a group for fundraising for the “outdoor recreation complex”
-Suggestions were made for representatives from the various community groups to meet annually to discuss planned activities and identify broader community needs.  This may enhance and help coordinate fund raising efforts and reduce “donor fatigue” in community.

Next Steps
The Trustees will consider the suggestions and determine how funds will be disbursed.  Decisions will be posted on this website.

Pointe au Baril Seniors Club

Pointe au Baril Seniors Club will hold it’s annual meeting on September 10, 2018 at the Community Centre.  Among the agenda items is the voting in of a new Executive team.  If you are interested in running for a position on the Executive, please contact Elsie Kelly at emkloon@yahoo.com

The Pointe au Baril Seniors Club is a non profit community based organization whose membership is open to all individuals age 50+.  The Club’s primary goal is to  support  it’s membership and in doing so strengthen its community.  It does this through various social, educational, and awareness activities and programs. 

Monthly meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 9 a.m. at the PAB Community Centre.

Pickleball – Pointe au Baril Community Centre

Join us for Pickleball on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings from  9:30a.m. to noon, at the Community Centre in Pointe au Baril.  Paddles and balls provided.

Friendly competition and good exercise!    Youth to seniors are welcome.  Beginners are welcome too!  

We play all year round.
